A Word to the Wise...

Welcome, dear reader, to a study of the human soul's darkest corners. Within, you will find two tales of madness, obsession, and terror.

Your task is not merely to read, but to investigate. You must delve into the minds of these narrators and ask yourself: Is this man a reliable witness to his own tale? Or is he a madman, guilty of a terrible crime?

Your Tools for the Investigation:

  • The Evidence Locker: When you correctly identify a key literary technique, you may add the passage to your Evidence Locker. This will be your dossier, a collection of proof to build your final case against the narrator.
  • The Narrator's Notebook: Should you need a reminder of the tools of the trade—suspense, tone, and mood—consult the Notebook.
  • Raven Coins: For your astute observations, you shall be rewarded. Spend your coins in the Shop for a small respite from the encroaching darkness.

Now, steel your nerves and begin. The abyss of the human soul awaits.

The Narrator's Notebook

How Authors Build Suspense:

  • Pacing: Short sentences for panic, long sentences for dread.
  • Foreshadowing: Hints about what is to come.
  • Dramatic Irony: The reader knows more than the characters.
  • Setting: A creepy location creates an uneasy feeling.
  • Unreliable Narrator: A storyteller you can't trust.

Understanding Tone

Tone is the author's or narrator's attitude toward the subject. Think of it as the "tone of voice" used in the writing. The same words can have different meanings based on the tone.

  • How it's created: Through word choice (diction), sentence structure, and the narrator's direct comments.
  • Example: In "The Cask of Amontillado," Montresor's tone is often deceptively friendly and concerned ("My dear Fortunato," "we will go back; your health is precious"). This creates an ironic tone because we know he has murderous intentions.
  • Words to describe tone: Sarcastic, Humorous, Formal, Ominous, Critical, Arrogant, Matter-of-fact.

Understanding Mood

Mood is the atmosphere of the story and the emotional feeling it creates in the reader. Think of it as the "emotional weather" of the scene.

  • How it's created: Through setting descriptions, imagery (details that appeal to the five senses), and the events of the plot.
  • Example: As Montresor leads Fortunato deeper into the catacombs, Poe describes the "damp," the "niter," and the "piles of bones." This creates a claustrophobic, ominous, and terrifying mood for the reader.
  • Words to describe mood: Mysterious, Joyful, Tense, Lonely, Gloomy, Suspenseful.
